A Smashing of Stereotypes in Aged Care

Smashing stereotypres in the aged care industry

Feros Care in collaboration with Ironbark Films, launched a new six-part documentary series called ‘Smashing’ on the Gold Coast this weekend in response to the severe shortage of aged-care workers in Australia.

According to research by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), the aged-care worker industry is currently facing a critical shortage of staff with a predicted deficit of approximately 110,000 direct-care workers by 2030.

The Smashing series authenticates the achievements, growth, and impact of aged care professionals and aims to change the negative perceptions surrounding this industry and promote a more accurate and positive view of aged care as a fulfilling and rewarding career choice.

Tarnya Sim, the creative marketing lead at Feros Care, said that people often do not perceive aged care as a rewarding career.

“That’s totally untrue,” Tarnya said. “This series showcases incredible individuals and careers within the industry that are testament to its rewarding nature.”

"The series celebrates the diverse range of individuals driving social change and smashing stereotypres by promoting inclusivity, regardless of factors such as race, age, sexuality, or disability.

“We hope this series will attract many more people to join an industry making a difference in people’s lives,” Tarnya said.

Julian Neuhaus, Series Director with Ironbark Films, an all-inclusive filmmaking team, said this series is all about people working in aged care where they don’t necessarily fit into the conventional mold.

“It became quite apparent that we were filming a diverse range of people who truly love what they do,” Julian said. "My advice is to think outside of the box in your career choices; you may be surprised by how rewarding and gratifying a job in aged care can be.”

The first episode of 'Smashing' has been released, with subsequent episodes scheduled for monthly release.
